How to Choose a Car Dealer

For many, online research has become a crucial step in making an informed new or used car purchase. Using online resources, you can explore & compare various models, and determine which features are right for you. You can also use the internet to research your financing and insurance options.

But when you’re ready to step outside to see and drive the cars in person, the next step is choosing a dealership. These characteristics can vary among dealers:

* Size and type of inventory
* Current special offers
* Services and amenities
* Reputation

Just online research helps you narrow down the make and model choices, it can also help with your selection of the dealers you want to visit.

BestDealerLocator.com is a helpful tool that allows you to search for dealerships in your area using criteria you specify. You’ll be glad you did your homework before you begin negotiating with a dealer. After you have narrowed down the dealerships you want to visit, you should also ask friends and relatives for their word-of-mouth opinions. Loyal customers are critical to a dealership’s long-term business, so the best dealers will have earned their customers’ trust.

Study Lists the Most Dependable Car Brands

In a study based on responses from over 41,000 owners of 2011 vehicles after three years of ownership, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac took the top three spots. Acura and Buick rounded out the top five. The study followed problems experienced during the last 12 months.

At the lower end of the rankings were Dodge, Land Rover, Jeep and Hyundai.

Owners of three-year-old vehicles experienced more problems than did owners of three-year-old vehicles in the previous year. Engine and transmission problems contributed to an overall decline in dependability for the first time in over 15 years. Until this year, studies have shown a continuous improvement in vehicle dependability, experts say. Some of the changes in technology that carmakers implemented for the 2011 model year have led to an increase in problems.

When it came down to individual models, General Motors shone. Its Chevrolet Volt ranked highest in the compact car segment, while the Chevrolet Camaro was rated highest in the midsize sporty segment for the second year in a row. Buick’s Lucerne was the highest rated large car, while the Cadillac DTS tied for best rated large premium car with the Lexus LS.

GM also earned the top two spots in the large heavy-duty pickup segment, with the GMC Sierra HD coming in on top and Chevrolet Silverado HD ranking 2nd.

Among the other winners, the 2011 Toyota Camry was the highest ranked midsize car, while the Honda CR-V was the best rated compact crossover.
